KFMH Muscatine, IA 1977
Yeah, that's me in the middle...with the glasses. Maybe one of the greatest radio stations ever. Playlist? Just don't repeat a song a day, that's all we ask. 100,000 watts of holy dynamite frequency modulation.
A mere lad of 22 making about $80 a week and living with the guy who ran the head shop. Driving a Volkswagen with no heater. Pot pies, tuna salad and mac and cheese were food groups. I don't think I had a better time. The gentleman on the far left is Kyle Riley (RIP). We did a show called "The Kyle Riley Randy Raley Ravenous Record Review" I dated Tommy Bolin's ex girlfriend. I miss those days. I was just a kid. I think he'd be proud of the site. He was good like that. He HATED Journey after Steve Perry joined them. We had many discussions....

Thank you for the post on KFMH ... having access to such a killer radio station as a kid made my teenage years so much better considering I was in the cultural wasteland of the QCA. Thanks- Devin Miller
ReplyDeleteI moved to Iowa City, IA in 1985 from Dongola, IL (population 700). I thought it was the big city...and to me it was. I was 18 years old. Within a short time, a whole new world of music was opened for me. I didn't know at the time that there was something special about KFMH. I assumed all "big city" stations were that cool and diverse. Of course, I later learned that wasn't the case. Just wanted to say "Thank You" for the reminder. I have still never found a station the likes of KFMH...yet I still listen to the music I first heard there.

I grew up in Washington, IA through the mid '80's and was an avid listener of KFMH. The station opened the world of music to my ears and showed the diversity that you can't find in commercial radio stations. I'm in Seattle now listening to KEXP 90.3 FM. KEXP is equally diverse in music and a world renknowed station for promoting independant music. Check it out kexp.org.

A fellow former Iowan and I were just discussing KFMH a few evenings ago. We recalled the Sunday night lineup of "Off The Beaten Track" followed by "Doctor Demento" if my memory serves correctly. OTBT opened up so much music it's ridiculous. Blues cruises were also a treat. Absolutely awesome. I didn't realize how spoiled I was growing up with access to this station until it went away.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the memories.
Hello Planetradio!
ReplyDeleteIn case you haven't heard, I'm part of a local group in Cedar Rapids; we've dubbed ourselves "The Radio Rangers" and we've gotten the green light from the FCC to move forward with our construction permit to start the build out for our new station KNBO-FM 88.7 and we would love to have any old (I say old lovingly) KFMH staff join us to share your wisdom?!

Happy New Year!

ReplyDeleteAs the person whose $1000 donation kicked 99 Plus KFMH "over the top" during its pledge drive to return to the air in 2013, I'm glad to say that both the original on 99.7 and the new internet version will always have a place in my heart.
